Windows Phone 8, or ‘Apollo,’ Debuts Next Month at San Francisco Conference

Microsoft will finally lay out the details on the next version of its smartphone OS, which could be a precursor to Windows 8.

June is turning into Developer’s Month. Along with Microsoft’s TechEd, there’s Apple’s WWDC, Google I/O, and a two-day Windows Phone developer conference in San Francisco that will be the coming out party for Windows Phone 8, otherwise known as “Apollo.”

RELATED: Skype May be Windows Phone’s Worst Enemy

MORE: Will Windows Phone feel any pain after getting dumped by LG?

Little has been disclosed on Apollo, but thanks to leaks, we have a pretty good idea of what Microsoft has in store. Last February, a leak gave some insight into what Microsoft was planning.

Most significant is that Windows Phone 8 will share components with Windows 8, allowing developers to reuse most of their code when porting an app from desktop to phone. It’s believed the kernel, networking stacks, security, and multimedia support will all have heavy overlap between desktop, tablet and phone.

Apollo will also support Near Field Communication (NFC) radios for contactless payments, full Skydrive integration and full integration with Skype and support for multicore processors.

Microsoft has said, and reiterated in an April 5 blog post, that current Windows Phone applications and games will run on the next major version of Windows Phone. How much recoding you’ll have to do to accomplish this will probably be discussed at the San Francisco show.

Another question that hopefully will be answered next month is what will change under the hood. Other Microsoft watchers with better connections than me have said they believe Microsoft will change the kernel from Windows CE to Windows 8 RT.

The potential is tremendous. If Microsoft does pull this off, you will have portability between desktop PCs, tablets and phones with relatively minor modification.

Speed Up Windows XP With System Mechanic 10.8

System Mechanic 10.8 Put Through The Test

We’ve all seen those annoying television commercials that promise to speed up a slow computer, but do such solutions really work? The CRN Test Center put Iolo’s System Mechanic 10.8 through its paces and was impressed with the results.

Our test subject was an old Pentium III-era PC running Windows XP so slowly that the machine was completely unusable. Just opening the Start menu easily took 20 seconds, opening an app required about a minute, and we could fix a steak-and-egg breakfast in the time it took to reboot this dinosaur.

But it was perfect for our purposes. We installed System Mechanic 10.8 and, after running a scan, the tool reported that the overall system status was poor and health and security were at alarming levels.

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at
Performance Problems
After many years of use (and neglect), Windows machines develop all sorts of issues that can sap performance and open the door to more problems. Listed first are the security flaws, which include absence of a firewall, dangerous start-up items and other security vulnerabilities.

System Mechanic also identified hundreds of registry problems, which happen normally over the course of time but nevertheless can slow down a system and make it prone to crashes. The tool also found more than 1 GB of junk. While this might not seem like much by today’s standards, it represented more than 1 percent of this system’s total hard drive capacity of 80 GB.

Results Of First Pass
System Mechanic was able to clean out all the clutter and remove the unwanted start-up items. Of the 611 registry errors found in the first scan, 591 were repaired, leaving 20 unfixed. Performance results after the first pass were moderate. After restarting, system responsiveness was slightly faster but still far too slow.

When we relaunched the tool, it reported that while our system’s health was now firmly in the green, its security was still at warning levels and our system status had only been upgraded from poor to fair. So we ran another scan.

Third Time’s The Charm
During a second pass at diagnosing the system, System Mechanic found 44 new registry errors in addition to the 20 problems left unrepaired from the first scan for a total of 64. It also found a new security vulnerability. But during the second repair pass, the tool fixed only 62 of the registry errors and did not repair the security problem.

A third pass found those issues, a third registry problem, and reported that available memory was running low. System Mechanic offered us the option of optimizing memory to fix the problem, which we did.

Getting Rid of CRUDD
We call them something else, but In Iolo’s parlance, “commonly redundant or unnecessary decelerators and destabilizers” are known as CRUDD. Whatever they’ve called, System Mechanic gets rid of them with its CRUDD remover. On our system there were four: an AOL Toolbar, an Ask Toolbar, a Google Toolbar for IE and a Yahoo Toolbar.

The screen here identifies each along with a judgment as to its favorability and presents options to keep, kill or decide later. We killed them all.

Good Enough
During the last repair pass, System Mechanic reported it had done some repairs on the system drive, realigning more than 30,000 files and defragmenting another 6,518. This led on the next pass to even more misalignments and fragmentations, a problem so pervasive that it affected more than the total size of the 80-GB volume. System Mechanic was able to repair all the problems but was never able to achieve more than a “fair” system status. However, the test system was transformed from “a hammer and chisel would be faster” to one that performs well enough to be used as a jukebox, backup PC for Internet access or for doing school papers.

With more than half of all Windows computers still using Windows XP, there are millions of systems out there in need of similar repairs. For such systems, the CRN Test Center recommends System Mechanic, which provides 50 tools in all, including those for acceleration, repair, cleanup and security, for $40 list. System Mechanic 10.8, released in April, is compatible with the current Windows 8 beta. A free version of System Mechanic 10.8 includes.

Aged Windows XP costs 5x more to manage than Windows 7

As XP’s life wanes, Microsoft talks dollars to get businesses to ditch 11-year-old OS

Computerworld – Microsoft yesterday added ammunition to its increasingly aggressive battle to get users off the nearly-11-year-old Windows XP by citing a company-sponsored report that claims annual support costs for the older OS are more than five times that of Windows 7.

Microsoft has been banging the Windows XP upgrade drum for years, but stepped up the campaign in 2012, including starting a “two-year countdown” to the demise of security support. Last month, Microsoft was blunt, saying “If your organization has not started the migration to a modern PC, you are late.”

Windows XP exits all support, including monthly security patches, in April 2014.

In a blog post Thursday, Erwin Visser, a senior director for Windows, used data collected by IDC to make Microsoft’s upgrade case.

“The bottom line…[is that] businesses that migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 will see significant return on investment,” said Visser.

Microsoft sponsored the survey (download PDF) conducted by IDC, which in turn interviewed nine enterprises or large organizations to drill into the support costs of XP and Windows 7.

According to IDC, an amazing 42% of the Windows “commercial” installed base, or anything other than consumers’ home machines, was Window XP, making Microsoft’s job of moving everyone off the old OS by its April 2014 retirement nearly impossible.

In fact, IDC projected that if current trends continue, 11% of the enterprise and educational Windows installed base will still be running XP when Microsoft stops patch delivery in 23 months.

And those XP machines costs organizations considerably more to support than comparable PCs running Windows 7.

One reason for the increased costs for supporting Windows XP is that it’s typically running on older hardware that, independent of the OS, is more expensive to simply keep running.

The magic milestone is after the three-year mark, when “costs begin to accelerate” because of additional IT and help desk time, and increased user downtime due to more security woes and time spent rebooting, said IDC.

IT labor costs jump 25% during year four of a PC’s lifespan, and another 29% in year five, IDC noted, while user productivity costs climb 23% in year four and jump 40% during year five. Total year five costs are a whopping 73% higher than support costs of a two-year-old client.

However, the operating system also plays a major role in the cost differences, said IDC, with XP more expensive to support in every category the research company surveyed.

Organizations reported that they spent 82% less time managing patches on Windows 7 systems than they did on Windows XP, 90% less time mitigating malware, and 84% less help desk time.

Benefits were also striking for Windows 7 users’ productivity compared to XP. Windows 7 users wasted 94% less time rebooting their computers and lost 90% less time due to malware attacks.

On the IT side, the savings of Windows 7 mount dramatically, IDC said.

“IT activities account for 11.3 hours of time spent per PC per year when using Windows XP,” the research group said. “Shops that have moved to Windows 7…spend 2.3 hours per PC per year on maintaining those systems.”

IDC did the math, and concluded that for every 230 PCs running Windows 7 rather than XP, an organization could shift one full-time IT person to other work. Or conceivably do without him or her entirely.

The Microsoft-commissioned report also painted a rosy return-on-investment (ROI) picture for companies who do ditch XP for Windows 7. By IDC’s calculations, the acquisition of a new PC — one where Windows 7 is retained as the OS rather than being downgraded to XP — pays for itself in one year and generates almost $1,000 more in savings from reduced IT costs and worker downtime over a three-year span.

“The migration from Windows XP to Windows 7 yields a 137% return on investment over a three-year period,” claimed IDC.

Windows XP have a shortening upgrade window — no pun intended — and not only because of the April 2014 end to all support. Microsoft is expected to launch Windows 8 this fall, a time when most new PCs will then also be pre-loaded with the OS by computer makers, or OEMs.

That will not immediately strike Windows 7 from the rolls, but it does start a couple of clocks ticking: OEMs can continue to sell Windows 7-powered PCs as long as two years after Windows 8’s launch, but the older operating system will disappear from most retail outlets one year earlier, or in the fall of 2013.

Organizations that have Software Assurance (SA) agreements — the Microsoft-sold software insurance policy that lets firms upgrade to every new version of a specific product released during the life of the deal — can downgrade any Windows 8 PC to Windows 7. But SA is almost exclusively an enterprise program.

Smaller firms that buy Windows licenses at retail, likely in the form of a new PC, can also downgrade from Windows 8 to 7, but only if the new system is pre-installed with Windows 8 Pro, the higher-end edition. They will also need media — a DVD or flash drive — containing Windows 7 Professional to complete the downgrade. If smaller shops wait too long, they may find it difficult to locate a seller for the latter after late 2013.

Likewise, while Windows XP Professional can be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional, companies sans SA also require a copy of the newer OS. The same end-of-retail caveat for Windows 7 applies to them as well.

Microsoft has been dissing Windows XP for some time, but the ROI report was its first argument that stressed dollars and cents.

In June 2011, a Microsoft manager said it was “time to move on” from Windows XP; earlier that year an executive on the Internet Explorer team belittled XP as “lowest common denominator” when he explained why the OS wouldn’t run the then-new IE9.

The company has not yet turned on Windows XP like it has on the 11-year-old Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). For more than two and a half years, Microsoft has urged users to give up IE6, going so far in March 2011 to launch a deathwatch website that tracks IE6’s shrinking share.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Microsoft followed suit with Windows XP once the OS drops to a more manageable share mark: According to Web metrics company Net Applications, XP accounted for 46.1% of all operating systems used to go online in April.

If XP continues to shed share at its last-12-months’ pace, it will still own a 17.6% share in April 2014, when it drops off support.

Chrome trumps IE as world’s top browser

StatCounter says Google’s browser edged Microsoft’s for the week’s No. 1 spot; Chrome on pace to take May, too
By Gregg Keizer

Computerworld – Google’s Chrome edged past Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) last week to become the world’s most widely used browser, according to data from an Irish metric firm.

Chrome’s average usage share for the week of May 14-20 was 32.8%, said StatCounter, an analytics company that tracks browser and operating system trends. For the same week, IE’s share was 31.9%.
MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at
Although Chrome has beaten IE in StatCounter’s tally before — a day here, another there, this was the first time that Google’s browser took the top spot for an entire week.

Mozilla’s Firefox placed third with a share of 25.5%, while Apple’s Safari and Opera Software’s Opera brought up the rear with 7.1% and 1.7%, respectively.

Chrome and IE are locked in a dead heat so far this month, separated by only five-hundredths of a percentage point through Sunday. The trend, however, is in Chrome’s favor: It came within a whisker of beating IE the week of May 7-13, and early Monday it led Microsoft’s browser 31.9% to 31.5%.

As recently as April, IE trounced Chrome by several percentage points. StatCounter pegged IE last month at 34.1%, Chrome at 31.2%.

But while Chrome may be on the verge of overtaking the long-time leader in StatCounter’s eyes, other measurement companies still have IE far ahead of Google’s 2008 upstart.

U.S.-based Net Applications, for example, tagged IE with a 54.1% share for April, compared to Chrome’s 18.9% and Firefox’s 20.2%. (By StatCounter’s numbers, Chrome slipped past Firefox to take second place six months ago.)

The two metrics vendors use different counting techniques, which results in their widely-divergent results.

Net Applications weights its data by country to account for the relative paucity of information from nations such as China, and adjusts for Chrome’s “pre-rendered” pages that users never actually see.

StatCounter does not weight its data by country, and only started to exclude Chrome’s pre-rendered pages May 1.

The result is that Net Applications’ numbers for IE are always larger than StatCounter’s, primarily because Chinese users overwhelmingly run Microsoft’s browser.

Not surprisingly, Microsoft has praised Net Applications’ browser share reporting and dismissed StatCounter’s as skewed.

Microsoft re-releases Office for Mac 2011 upgrade after fixing bugs

Five days after yanking SP2 from its auto-update servers, Microsoft reissues patched version

Computerworld – Microsoft yesterday re-released Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2 (SP2) after fixing a bug that wormed into the original update.

Last Friday, three days after it first issued Office for Mac 2011 SP2, Microsoft yanked the upgrade from its automatic update service when it acknowledged a bug had corrupted the Outlook database on some machines.
MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at
In a post on the Office for Mac blog yesterday, Microsoft said the revised SP2 “fixes a number of issues,” including the database corruption problem.

While SP2 offered improvements for several applications in the suite, most targeted the Outlook email client bundled with the upper-end retail edition, Home and Business, as well as the academic and enterprise versions.

The new SP2 will repair any databases corrupted by the original upgrade, said Microsoft in a support document, which also spelled out tips for migrating AppleScript and Autocorrect lists to new folder destinations.

Although Microsoft’s support forums do not yet include messages from users who have applied the SP2 re-release, customers have not been shy about commenting on last week’s gaffe.

“I’m really upset with this SP2 update,” said someone identified as “ggruda” in a message added to a long support thread Tuesday. “Who has the time to go through all the BS to get their database rebuilt and get Outlook running again? I’m looking for an alternative.”

All Office for Mac 2011 users will be offered the revised SP2, including those who had downloaded the original April 12 version.

Microsoft has been forced to yank, then re-release, updates before. The most embarrassing blunders in recent years were in February 2010 when it stopped serving a security update to Windows XP PCs that were crashing with the notorious “Blue Screen of Death,” and two years earlier, when Microsoft shut down an update for Windows Vista that crippled systems with endless reboots.

Office for Mac 2011 debuted in October 2010, and is available in two editions for the general public, as well as others for academic and enterprise customers.

Microsoft made a big deal about the Start button being removed from the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It actually still exists in functional form, just invisibly — in Windows 8’s Desktop mode (the GUI environment that resembles the classic Windows desktop), hover the pointer over the lower-left corner of the screen, and a thumbnail of the Start Metro panel pops open. Clicking this thumbnail opens the Start Metro panel. But if you miss the good ol’ Start button, you can install one. Stardock, a company known for its myriad of Windows customization software, released a free tool, Start8, that puts the Start button back.

Put in a new Start Menu
The Stardock utility, Start8, also plugs in an application launcher which looks and works similarly to the old Start Menu interface. Of course, doing this and putting back the Start button brings to question why you would even bother to install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in the first place when its new program launcher UI, Metro, is its most prominent, front-and-center feature.

Change rectangles to squares
Under the Metro UI, the panels represent icons for apps or are windows of widgets showing information updated in real-time (e.g., news headlines, stock quotes, weather). To avoid having to scroll the Start Metro panel toward the right, set any of these panels that are rectangles to squares. Do this by right-clicking on the panel and choosing “Smaller.” Leave the widgets that show you updated information as rectangles if this display size works better for you.

Un-install or un-pin unneeded Metro apps
This is another simple and obvious way to tighten up the layout of the Start Metro panel — just un-install (or un-pin from the Start Metro panel) any app and widget that comes preinstalled on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview that you don’t need or want to use. Right-click on its panel and select “Uninstall” or “Unpin from Start.”

Remove the Ribbon
The Ribbon UI, first introduced in Office 2007, seems to have an equal share of fans, haters and those indifferent to it. Over time, Microsoft has integrated the Ribbon into their other applications. Now in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, the UI of Windows Explorer has been Ribbon-ized. Don’t like it? You can minimize it by right-clicking on the Ribbon and selecting “Minimize the Ribbon” or alternatively clicking the up-arrow set to the far right, just above the Ribbon UI. But if you despise it so much, you can strip it out from Windows Explorer completely by running a free tool, Ribbon Disabler.

Adjust sync settings
Since Windows 8 has been designed to be used on tablets, too, it will incorporate a whole bunch of settings for keeping your applications, browser and system preferences in sync with the cloud and any other devices of yours running Windows 8. If you’re using Windows 8 as a desktop or notebook OS, you should keep track of what it’s syncing and turn off whatever you don’t need to have synced, especially if you’re not using Windows 8 on another computer, to save on system resources and protect your privacy. Go to the sync settings by moving the pointer to either the upper-right or lower-right corner of the screen, click the gear icon that appears on the screen, select “More PC settings,” and then “Sync.

Activate SkyDrive
SkyDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage service. There’s a SkyDrive app listed on the Start Metro panel. Through it, you can upload files to the cloud — to storage space on your SkyDrive user account — and download files you’ve stored on it to your local computer. Conveniently, you can access your SkyDrive files from another computer (whether it’s running Windows 8 or another OS) through a Web browser. Microsoft offers 25GB of space on SkyDrive for free. All you have to do is log in with a Windows Live or Hotmail account, or sign up for either service for free.

Boot to Desktop Mode
By default, the Windows 8 Consumer Preview boots to the Start Metro panel. If you prefer to stick with using Windows 8 the “old way,” through its Desktop UI, and don’t want to have to click the Desktop icon panel on the Start Metro interface in order to enter this mode, you can adjust things so Windows 8 will go straight to the Desktop instead. It is, however, an involved process to pull this off.

How to fight back against privacy pirates

You can’t delete digital data, but you can mask your Internet identity

Have you Googled yourself lately? Is the information about you accurate or full of inconsistencies, both of which can be devastating?
Accurate information that you’d rather be kept private can be used by stalkers to find where you are and by cyber criminals to steal your identity and empty out your bank account. While incorrect data that casts you in a bad light can cost you a promotion, a job, or even your business.

Identity theft reporting system needs improvement
7 ways to mask your identity
So, how can you reclaim your digital privacy and fight back against companies that collect your personal data and sell it for their own profit. What if you want to completely erase your online presence? Is that even possible?

Unfortunately, the short answer is no. But here’s what you can do to mask your identity and make it difficult for the privacy pirates.

Security by obscurity
“There is no ‘delete’ button on the Internet,” says Avivah Litan, fraud detection and identity theft analyst/vice president at Gartner Research. “The stuff never gets deleted. The best users can generally do is pay some company to put the ‘bad’ stuff towards the bottom of a longer list, so it’s obscure. Sometimes they can try to get to the source and get them to delete the information, but that is a very painstaking and often fruitless exercise.”

Robert Siciliano, online security analyst at McAfee, adds, “In order to completely erase all online identity, one would need lots of time, focus and persistence. This means no more online profiles, no social media profiles, no blogs, no websites, and removing your name and contact information from all lists and from the phone book (which also ends up online). Even if you shop online and check the box requesting not to be contacted, there is a good chance you’ll still end up on a list. Despite your efforts to erase your online identity, it requires ongoing maintenance to remain offline. The problem is, once it’s digital, it’s repeatable. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, those that control the data may not comply.”

According to Alan Webber, principal analyst and partner at Altimeter Group, LLC, “There are some products out there such as Web 2.0 Suicide Machine that supposedly do this [provide online identity protection]. Whether or not they are truly successful is hard to say. They go in and delete the accounts along with requesting that all backups of the information also be deleted. However, if some of this information escapes into marketing databases, it may be very difficult to delete or remove it.”

“This is true,” adds Siciliano. “There is no service that I am aware of that can guarantee 100% removal of all online identity data.” Vendors such as McAfee and others offer identity protection software, which includes credit monitoring across all three credit bureaus, unlimited credit reports, lost wallet protection, plus Internet and public records monitoring.”

Track the trackers
Companies such as Intelius, Spokeo, MyLife, PeekYou, BeenVerified, PeopleFinder, and Radaris (to name a few) collect your personal information, sell it, then make it difficult, if not impossible, to get it removed.

It’s true that most of these companies have an “Opt Out” option but, unfortunately, you have to “register” and agree to their terms; thereby confirming (and updating) your personal information before you can Opt Out. Some even require a scan of your driver’s license before you can request removal.

Siciliano says, “If you want to spend the time requesting information removal, you should keep in mind that it’s only a matter of time before your information is out there, everywhere, all over again.”

Think about it. Every time you access the Internet, your activities are being tracked. One free product that you can download to see who’s tracking you and then block them from mining data off your computer is Abine’s DoNotTrackPlus. This won’t remove any of your personal information, but it will help prevent continued surveillance and distribution.

However, if removal is your goal, Abine has another product/service called DeleteMe, which monitors and continually removes your personal data, but only from specific data aggregation sites, not from the Internet in general or from sites where the information originated, like phone books and databases of public records.

Hide your IP address
There are also a number of IP scrambler programs, such as Virtual World Computing’s Cocoon, which reveals you as a generic “Cocoon user” to anyone who’s looking. “Cocoon acts as a smart proxy,” says Brian Fox, co-founder and CTO. “When a user is logged into Cocoon, only Cocoon’s IP address can be seen, not the users’, and cookies can be easily blocked entirely, or just stored in your Cocoon account. Without Cocoon, cookies are stored in your browser and freely given and shared with websites and ad networks without your knowledge.”

According to Fox, Cocoon protects your privacy both externally and internally. For example, it protects you from identity theft on public WiFi, by providing you a secure, encrypted way to connect to the Web over unencrypted WiFi. Without this, your connection can be intercepted along with the data you enter into websites, including passwords and credit card numbers, which can be exposed.

Read the ‘terms of service’
Siciliano says, “Most of the data that identity brokers publish are extracted from public records or by for-profit companies that obtained it from the person themselves. This person most likely agreed to the Terms of Service that allowed their data to be sold to a third party. The same goes for photos. If you actually took the time to read the Terms of Service before clicking ‘I Agree,’ you probably wouldn’t agree with them.”

For example, Terms of Service (or Agreement) where users blindly click “yes” can result in massive privacy invasion, which can involve everyone on your computer’s or cell phone’s contact list. For example, Facebook’s smartphone apps provide a “sync” feature where you can synchronize your contact list from your phone to Facebook.

If you choose “Sync Contacts,” you just exposed all your friends and family to Facebook’s analytics and Facebook is one of the primary sources of information for companies that collect and then broker your information. There have also been complaints from people who claim that they never selected “Sync Contacts,” but Facebook did it anyway.

Hide in plain sight
Altimeter’s Webber adds, “Other services attempt to hide your identity by propagating a number of false, but similar, online identities with similar digital characteristics; thereby, hiding the individual in the noise. This is effective from a blunt-force level, but will likely be overcome by analytics.”

This may be true, but combined with some of the aforementioned program options (or other similar products/services), some people have found that creating a labyrinth of identities to mask your real identity is quite effective.

This maze gives these intruders a web of complications that’s so confusing; the privacy pirates are unable to distinguish fantasy from reality. For example: You need to create several alias identities, but not randomly. Use your full name, then create four or five aliases at different locations. Be sure to include one of those locations in your own city and state. Then try this:

1. First on the list: create several Facebook accounts with your name and the five addresses you’ve chosen for your five alias identities. Choose a college or high school to find friends, then send out Friend Requests to a few dozen of the people Facebook recommends. Most people accept anyone who sends a Friend Request, so don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of friends to round out your social status. Fill in everything, share everything with everyone, and make the information about your job and education similar to the truth, but everything else is a fabrication, including the photo. You will soon see these aliases popping up all over the Internet.

2. Revisit every site you can remember where you filled out a form requesting your personal data. After you login, edit the form and fill it with the data from one of your aliases. Be sure to keep track of your five aliases including login, passwords, etc. For other info, just screen capture the Facebook pages. Contrary to popular belief, editing records will overwrite the older files and, eventually, the older records will disappear.

3. The most difficult identity to create involves credit cards, which we all use to make online purchases. Get together with some of your friends and exchange addresses. Get one credit card for online purchases and use a friend’s address, and he will use yours, as a way of further confusing the information aggregators.

4. Sign up for a bunch of online services using your aliases such as MySpace, Flickr, a few game sites, some shopping sites, travel sites, and e-cards. Those e-cards are notorious for spreading your data around.

5. Give each of your aliases e-mail addresses at all the free sites such as Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, MSN, Bing, and anyone else who offers free e-mails. As a tip, change one small thing in each entry so you can track exactly who is brokering your data; for example, if you use an apartment address, change the apt letter from A to B to C; or use Apt B for Bing, Apt G for Google, Apt H for Hotmail, etc.

6. And last, do not contribute your information to any “Who Is” service or, instead, use an alias, and remember to remove your name from all your websites. Use generic names such as webmaster, president, CEO, sales, customer support, etc. or just invent some creative employees such as Captain Hook or If you feel these names are unprofessional, then create professional ones like Robert T Burke or Samuel J Potter.

Do not delete
Asking these sites to remove your information is a lot of work and probably a waste of time because you are asking them to give up revenue. But be smart. Purchase the necessary software, create aliases, and stop spreading your own information.

And remember the most important thing: never delete anything, always edit and resave the edited data over the old data. All of your information is digital and controlled by programming code that’s always looking for “new” files. These systems are programmed to save all the deleted files, but edited files; that is, files with the same filename are backed up onto servers on top of (that is, they overwrite) the old files with the same filename. Old versions of the edited files are kept for a few months (more or less, based on the individual pirate company’s policies) but, eventually, the older edited files will disappear.
