Over View Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 : MCTS 70-662 and MCITP 70-663

A number of articles have been published on Windows PowerShell, but very few of these are dedicated to Exchange Server 2012. I am an Exchange administrator. I am not a developer. Yet, I have found an increasing need to improve my development skills in order to be an effective administrator—first with Exchange Server 2007, then with Windows Server 2008, and now with Exchange Server 2010. Fortunately, with Windows
PowerShell and Exchange Management Shell, I can do so without having to learn a complicated language and extensive developmental concepts—something I really have no desire to do as an administrator. With just a simple verb-noun combination, I can achieve fantastic things in the Exchange organization and still be able to sleep at night without pieces of code swirling around in my head as I dream.

What’s New in PowerShell 2.0
Microsoft Windows PowerShell is a combined command-line shell and scripting language designed primarily for administrators, not developers. Prior to the introduction of Windows PowerShell into operating systems, administrators were forced to learn a programming language such as Visual Basic to fully manipulate objects in the Active Directory and Exchange environment if the graphical user interface (GUI) did not provide
an easy means for administration. Mainly, an administrator found the need for additional tools, such as custom VB scripts, when he or she wanted to manage objects in bulk. PowerShell 2.0 includes significant changes from the original version.

How Do You Retrieve Information About All Network Connections?

One of the objectives of the MCTS .NET Framework exam is to Embed management
information and events into a .NET Framework application. (Refer
System.Management namespace) and within that exam objective there is the
specific objective

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

Retrieve information about all network connections.

I started to look through the System.Management namespace and found the
ManagementObject and the ManagementObjectSearcher. Then the clarity of the
examples of the descriptions and examples began to muddy. I understood that the
ManagementObjectSearcher was using an ObjectQuery object to perform the search.
It was completely unclear WHAT was being queried.

My investigations then lead me to the Windows Management Interface, known as WMI.
What does this have to do with ObjectQuery and the ManagementObjectSearcher
classes? Well, WMI and the underlying WMI classes are what is actually being
queried. The queries are written in a SQL derivative named WQL. There is a
dizzying variety of information exposed by WMI.

After the mechanics of writing a query are understood, the next task is to find
the correct WMI class that encapsulates the information you need. In the case of
our question at hand, we are looking for networking information.

At first I was happy to find the Win32_NetworkConnection class, but found that
it did not return information for me. (Despite having a connection up for
writing this post). The next promising class was the Win32_NetworkAdapter class.
Using this class I created the example below that retrieves information about
all network connections.

A “gotcha” to consider before reviewing the code below:

My first version of the code listed a number of adapters. I then determined that
it listed physical AND logical network adapters. You will see an if block in the
code to distinguish between physical and logical adapters.

Retrieve Information About All Network Connections Example using System;

// A reference to the System.Management assembly needs

// to be added to your project…

using System.Management;

namespace NetworkConnectionsExample

{

class Program

{

static void Main(string[] args)

{

// In order to use ManagementObjectSearcher, we need to

// supply an query string to search on. We are searching

// against differenct classes exposed by the Windows Management

// Interface(WMI).

ManagementObjectSearcher network_connections =

new ManagementObjectSearcher(

“SELECT * FROM Win32_NetworkAdapter”);

Console.WriteLine(“nFirst we will just list the names of all physical
adapters”);

Console.WriteLine(“and their connection status”);

Console.WriteLine(“—————————–“);

// The query of the underlying ObjectQuery object is not executed

// until the Get() function is executed.

foreach (ManagementObject connection in network_connections.Get())

{

// Knowledge by experiment… on my machine there were a number

// of network adapters displayed on my first version of this code.

// I know I only have three pyhisical adapters (Wireless, 10/100,

// and 1394) so I empirically determined that the Management Objects

// with the NetConnectionStatus property were physical apdapters and

// not logical adapters… mileage may vary, results not insured 😉

if (connection.Properties[“NetConnectionStatus”].Value != null)

{

Console.WriteLine(“Product Name: ” + connection.Properties[“ProductName”].Value);

Console.WriteLine(“Connection Status: ” +
connection.Properties[“NetConnectionStatus”].Value);

Console.WriteLine(“—————————–“);

}

}

Console.WriteLine(“nNext we will show all of the information availalbe for each
physical adapter.”);

Console.WriteLine(“Probably more than you ever wanted to know about your network
adapter, but your software might need to know it…”);

Console.WriteLine(“—————————–“);

foreach (ManagementObject connection in network_connections.Get())

{

if (connection.Properties[“NetConnectionStatus”].Value != null)

{

foreach (PropertyData d in connection.Properties)

{

Console.WriteLine(“– Name: ” + d.Name + ” Value: ” + d.Value);

}

Recycle It! SharePoint’s First Line of Defense

Introduction
With the introduction of SharePoint 2007, Microsoft saw fit to give us the recycle bin for catching and holding onto tossed away information before it was lost forever. Not only did the recycle bin provide us with the opportunity to recover items for a defined period of time, but this recycle bin actually had two parts. The first stage held items tossed away by users, from which they could retrieve said items if they discovered they still needed them. The second stage provided a catch-all bucket for items that were subsequently dumped by users from the first stage, out of which a Site Collection Administrator could then retrieve these items, provided their expiration time had not passed.

While SharePoint 2010 continues the tradition of this two-stage recycle bin, it seems that there is still some confusion as to just how the recycle bin functions. This article will delve into the mystery that seems to be this little wonder of restoration and hopefully provide the clarity to its configuration and usage.

How SharePoint’s Recycle Bin Works
Let’s begin with the basic operation of SharePoint’s recycle bin. To start with, the recycle bin is both user-specific and site-specific. This means that from the user’s perspective they will only see items in the trash that they have deleted from the specific site they are currently visiting.

And just what goes into the recycle bin? List and library items, as well as lists and libraries themselves all get caught in the recycle bin when a user chooses to delete said items from SharePoint. If a list or library is deleted, all of the items contained in that list or library are deleted as well. However, if a user decides to delete their entire site, don’t expect to go into the recycle bin and find it. It won’t be there. Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 adds a Site recycle bin to capture deleted sites, but we’ll review that later. For now, simply bear in mind that only items, lists and libraries can be found in the user’s trash. Therefore, users are able to retrieve an item or an entire library, without the aid of an administrator, if they discover that they really did need that material.
MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training
at certkingdom.com

Deleted items can only be restored to their original location. This means that if you have deleted items from a library and then the library itself is subsequently deleted, you must first restore the library before you can restore a specific item from that library. Simply creating a new library with the same name will not work. Items are all identified and referenced by their Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs), so, creating a new library would generate a new GUID.

Since the recycle bin is user/site-specific, what happens if someone deletes an item that another user needs? This is where the Site Collection recycle bin comes in. The Site Collection recycle bin, viewable by Site Collection Administrators, provides a comprehensive view of everything in the trash throughout the entire Site Collection. Think of the Site Collection recycle bin as the dumpster out back where all the trash for the entire building goes. Viewing the Site Collection recycle bin, a Site Collection Administrator will see all the deleted items from all of the sites within the collection and can then restore any item that a user has deleted.

It is from the Site Collection recycle bin that Site Collection administrators have access to the second stage of the recycle bin. This is where items go that have been deleted from the user recycle bin before they are purged. Item purging is based upon the recycle bin settings that can be found in Central Administration and are configured for the web application. It is also here, in the second stage, where a Site Collection administrator will find sites that may have been deleted by users. This is, of course, if you have installed SP1 for SharePoint 2010.

So just what are these settings and how do they work? In Central Administration, under the Application Management heading, Manage Web Applications, select the web application you want to adjust the recycle bin settings for and then select General Settings from the ribbon. Scroll down until you find the Recycle Bin settings section as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1 – Recycle Bin Settings Section
First of all, we have the ability to turn off the recycle bin completely. While there are some organizations where this is the chosen method of operations, most of us will want to avail ourselves of this handy option and leave it on. The default setting is for the recycle bin to store items for 30 days. Items held within the recycle bin will count towards any Site Collection quota settings you might have configured, so you will want to take this into consideration when planning your SharePoint environment. Switching this to the Never option will simply allow items in the recycle bin to accumulate until a user manually deletes items from the trash (and we know how often that will happen) and could therefore use up all of the quota space for a Site Collection eventually. Setting the purge duration is a good idea. Furthermore, I would suggest giving some serious thought to increasing the time that items are kept within the recycle bin itself. From a disaster recovery perspective, when comparing the cost of restoring data from backups vs. the cost of additional disk space for longer recycle storage, my point should become increasingly clear.

The second stage of the recycle bin seems to be where most of the confusion abounds. Let’s start with the storage setting. By default, items in the second stage will take up no more than 50 percent of the quota assigned to the Site Collection. If you have set a Site Collection quota of 100mb, items in the second stage can take up to an additional 50mb of disk space. Once this limit is reached and as newer items are dumped from the first stage and caught by the second stage, older items that are lying around in the second stage will be purged. There is no catch-all for items that are removed from the second stage. This also means that for collections that do not have a quota assigned, the recycle bin can simply grow and possibly fill up your entire database disk space.

The second stage can also be turned off. Before doing this, think very hard about how often it is needed to recover items that users have tossed from the trash to make room for something else because they were running out of disk space. By planning storage needs properly and taking into account the extra space for your second stage bin, it can be a very handy part of a recovery plan.

Now, let’s revisit the 30-day delete items setting. This 30 days, (or whatever preferred range it is set to) applies to both the first and second stages of the recycle bin. This is a one-setting, cover- all situation that covers 30 days total, not 30 days each. When a user deletes an item from a list or library, the 30-day timer starts. If at 28 days into the count the item is then deleted from the first stage, it rolls over to the second stage where it will sit for two more days before being purged for good. If the item would cause the second stage bin to hit its quota maximum, then an older item in the second stage would be deleted to make room for the new arrival.

Information Summary and Consideration Points
Plan a strategy well when implementing SharePoint’s recycle bin. Remember to account for the added storage needs when planning databases and consider hold times when planning a recovery model. A well-implemented recycle bin is an important element in a Disaster Recovery plan and can save both time and money over the SharePoint farm’s lifespan.

Microsoft remains mum on Windows 8 upgrades from Vista, XP

Limits upgrade path confirmation to 2009’s Windows 7

Computerworld – Microsoft today declined to confirm whether users of Windows XP and Vista will be able to upgrade their PCs to Windows 8 when the latter launches later this year.

On Monday, Microsoft spelled out the editions it would offer customers working with 32- and 64-bit Intel and AMD processor-powered PCs and tablets.

In that blog post, the company also noted the upgrade paths to Windows 8 for existing machines, saying that people now running Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic or Home Premium could upgrade to the consumer-oriented Windows 8. Systems running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate will be upgradable to Windows 8 Pro.

Although Microsoft did not specify the upgrade path for customers currently running Windows 7 Enterprise, the assumption is that they will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise, which, like its predecessor, will be distributed only to companies with Software Assurance upgrade agreements.

The omission of the problem-plagued Vista and the nearly 11-year-old XP from Microsoft’s explicit upgrade path seemed odd: In February, the company used an FAQ to plainly state that users of those OSes could upgrade to Windows 8’s beta, tagged “Consumer Preview.”

“You can upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview from Windows Developer Preview, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP,” the FAQ stated, “but you might not be able to keep all of your files, programs and settings.”

Developer Preview was Microsoft’s name for the first public sneak peak at Windows 8 as a work-in-progress, and was issued last September.

In the FAQ, Microsoft said that Vista users who upgraded would retain user accounts and files, as well as Windows settings. XP-to-Windows 8 upgrades would only preserve user accounts and files. Windows 7-to-Windows 8 upgrades, meanwhile, conserved not only user accounts, data files and Windows settings, but also already-installed applications in the move.

Ironically, migrating from Windows 7 is more thorough than from Windows 8’s own Developer Preview, which will retain only as much information as an XP-to-Windows 8 transfer.

When asked today whether Vista and XP users would be able to upgrade to Windows 8 RTM, or “release to manufacturing” — the label used to designate the final code — as they were allowed in the Consumer Preview, a Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment. “[We have] no information to share outside of what’s in the blog,” she said in an email.

It’s possible Microsoft was using a narrow definition of “upgrade” in the Monday blog that confirmed only Windows 7-to-Windows 8 paths, one that included application migration as well as that for files and settings.

Previously, that kind of upgrade has been called “in-place,” or one that leaves everything undisturbed as it swaps out the old OS for the new.

If Vista and XP get the cold shoulder, it wouldn’t be the first time.

Three years ago, Microsoft offered an in-place upgrade to Windows 7 to users running Vista, but gave XP customers only the option of what it called a “custom” install — others pegged it as a “clean” install — that deleted all data on the hard drive before installing the then-new operating system.

It may seem foolish to exclude XP users from a possible Windows 8 upgrade since that 2001 edition powered 51% of all Windows PCs that went online last month, according to metrics company Net Applications. Vista accounted for another 8% of all Windows editions.

But the aged hardware running XP may be the hurdle Windows 8 can’t jump: Microsoft has repeatedly said that PCs able to run Windows 7 will be able to run the new OS, but the system requirements it outlined for the Consumer Preview — a 1GHz processor, 1GB of memory and a graphics card able to handle DirectX 9 or later — may preclude many older machines.

Microsoft has not yet revealed the pricing for Windows 8’s upgrades, or described how they will be distributed.

While Windows 7’s upgrade in 2009 was handled much the same as always, Microsoft debuted a new strategy with Office 2010 when it dropped upgrade pricing — a move that effectively raised costs for users of earlier editions of the suite — and launched single-license “key cards” that carried only an activation code.

According to one analyst, Microsoft is unlikely to follow Apple’s lead and offer Windows 8 upgrades only through its online channels, which could include Windows Store, the software market designed for Windows 8. Microsoft has not said whether Windows 7 users will be able to access that e-store.

Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) Help prove your expertise in systems administration on Windows Server 2003 and earlier operating systems by earning a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) certification. For newer technologies, such as Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Windows Server 2008, or Microsoft SQL Server 2008, the Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) is the appropriate certification to pursue.

Here are some of the key concepts in a MCSA Certification Exam:

1. Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment. This exam will measure your ability to manage technical tasks like Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment that often includes monitoring server hardware and optimizing disk performance. Other technical task involves Managing Users, Computers, and Groups, Managing and Maintaining Access to Resources, Managing and Maintaining a Server Environment, and Managing and Implementing Disaster Recovery. Study guides for this concept are widely available. It is best that you read about them.

2. Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure. The focus of this concept is networking and the internet. For this concept, the examinee should read about managing and maintaining IP addresses, Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining Network Security, and Maintaining a Network Infrastructure. All these are important because a Systems Administrator should be adept in handling problems in relation to networking and internet.

3. Operating systems are also one of the key concepts in the MCSA certification Exam. In order to pass this category the examinee should read and focus one of the following topics: Configuring Windows 7, Configuring Windows Vista Client, and Installing, Configuring and Administering Windows XP Professional. There is
no need to study all the operating systems, the examinee only has to pick one OS and focus on that OS.

Earning a Microsoft Certification helps validate your proven experience and knowledge in using Microsoft products and solutions. Designed to be relevant in today’s rapidly changing IT marketplace, Microsoft Certifications help you utilize evolving technologies, fine-tune your troubleshooting skills, and improve your job satisfaction.

Techies work harder as benefits go bust

Consumer, corporate and even SCADA systems could be at risk when Microsoft stops supporting Windows XP.

Microsoft’s recent announcement that it will end support for the Windows XP operating system in two years signals the end of an era for the company, and potentially the beginning of a nightmare for everyone else.

“Richard,” a 40-year-old IT architect, felt like his career path had reached its end at the financial services company where he’d worked for seven years. In a shaky economy, he was grateful to have a job at all, but when his employer eliminated matching funds in his 401(k) plan, as well as its profit-sharing program — which usually put an extra $1,000 in his pocket each year — he knew he had to go.

IT salaries rise
“Benefits were the straw that broke the camel’s back,” says Richard, who, like several other IT pros interviewed, was wary of revealing his real name, given the sensitivity of the topic. He is now a director of IT security at a media company where his salary and benefits are both “a bit better” and healthcare is less expensive.

Like rubbing salt in a wound, more than a quarter of the respondents to Computerworld’s Salary Survey 2012 reported that their benefits had been cut in the past 12 months as a result of the slower economy. At the same time, even though average salaries were up 2.1% for 2012, average bonuses dropped by 1.1%, creating a drag on what would otherwise feel like forward motion for many workers.

The double whammy of smaller bonuses and fewer benefits could explain why more than one-third of the 4,337 IT professionals who responded to the survey said they stayed flat financially over the past two years, with another third saying they lost ground in the same time period. Only 29% reported gaining ground.

The survey data shows that healthcare benefits, tuition reimbursements and 401(k) plans were hit the hardest. These types of benefits “tend to roll around depending on the economy,” says Dallas L. Salisbury, president and CEO of the Employee Benefit Research Institute in Washington.

Jeffrey L. Martineau hasn’t had a raise in 30 months or a benefits boost in 10 years. Now his employer has cut the annual lump sum payment into his retirement plan from between 3% and 5% down to 1% — a $2,000 shortfall each year.

“Cutting back on my retirement funds is significant to me at this point,” says Martineau, 53, director of automated information systems at Harc, a nonprofit in Hartford, Conn., that provides services for people with disabilities. “It will cause me to work longer, and when I do retire, it’s not going to be as comfortable of a life as I would like.”

Even so, the situation isn’t dire enough to cause the 25-year Harc veteran to switch to a new employer. For him to consider moving, “it would have to be a really good package, and there would have to be some longevity built in,” says Martineau. Besides, he adds, “I get the feeling from [Harc executives] that they would really like to bring back a higher benefit for retirement, but they just financially can’t this year.”

For the most part, employees have been understanding of their companies’ struggles with the economy and rising healthcare costs, observers say. “They’re happy to get any kind of healthcare, even if they have to pay for it. People do not want to be without healthcare,” says David Foote, CEO and chief research officer at IT HR consultancy Foote Partners in Vero Beach, Fla. “Benefits matter a lot to people.”

ROI of perks
Penn benefits keep IT staffers engaged
The economy has taken a toll on many companies’ benefits programs, but some employers say offering perks is worth the cost. At the University of Pennsylvania — one of the top benefits providers on Computerworld’s Best Places to Work in IT 2011 list — benefits not only keep employees from moving on, but also keep them engaged, according to Jack Heuer, vice president for human resources.

The university has managed to maintain its healthcare, 403(b) and professional development benefits over the past few years, and it has added a $5,000 adoption benefit and “a substantial subsidy” for third-party child care or adult care for up to 10 calendar days a year — all while keeping undergraduate tuition at its lowest percentage increase in 40 years.

Heuer credits Penn’s ability to increase benefits to a “strong management philosophy” that was established before the economic downturn. “We need to attract and retain employees,” he says. “We recognize that our IT staff could work anywhere.”

“We’re doing this because of employee engagement, which helps build the university and its academic mission,” he adds. “Engaged employees make the university a better place.”

— Stacy Collett

The average benefits package can account for 30% of a worker’s total pay package, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And while base pay mattered most to this year’s Salary Survey respondents — 73% ranked it as their top priority — benefits were No. 2, mentioned by 59% of survey-takers.

Can benefits, or lack thereof, cause IT workers to change jobs? That depends largely on what stage of life they’re in. According to a 2011 MetLife study of employee benefit trends, Generation Y employees (ages 21 to 31) generally don’t feel as strongly as those in other age groups that benefits are a reason to stay at a job. In comparison, Gen Xers (ages 32 to 47), who are likely to be grappling with the costs of raising children, say workplace benefits are a strong reason to stay with their current employers.

Charging more, paying less

“Patrick,” a data security specialist in Iowa and a father of three, would put himself in the latter camp. “The benefits just slowly get tighter and tighter on what they allow and what the exclusions are,” he says. “When you look at salary raise versus insurance price hikes, your net gain is minimal. Trying to maintain all things related to a home life becomes difficult when a company is charging you more and paying you less.”

Tuition reimbursement tops the list of preferred benefits for “Daniel,” a 35-year-old customer support specialist at a financial services firm in Pennsylvania who is working toward a bachelor’s degree in business management. The cost of his tuition has jumped 35% in the past three years. At first, his company covered all costs for 10 to 12 credits per year, but that has been reduced to a $5,200 flat fee.

Nonetheless, neither Gen Xer plans to leave his job solely for better perks. Likewise, young baby boomers (ages 46 to 54) don’t appear to be a serious flight risk either, but job dissatisfaction could lead them to be less engaged and a potential threat to productivity, according to the MetLife study.

As for older boomers, many are finding they’re financially unprepared for retirement. Derick Moore, 68, a senior staff programmer at LSI, a semiconductor and software design firm in Milpitas, Calif., is facing rising healthcare costs and contemplating what that will mean after retirement.

For doctor visits, he pays “a couple thousand [dollars] a year” out of pocket, and his health insurance premiums have risen from $80 per paycheck in 2009 to $115 in 2012. Overall, Moore insists he’s “a happy camper” at his company of almost 16 years. He’s just wary of the rising percentages he’s being asked to pay.

Tech employees who are frustrated enough to consider switching jobs may want to look for a new employer that approaches benefits from a generational perspective and with more choices, flexibility and customization, say HR professionals.

Employees should check out whatever voluntary benefits their companies offer — including accident insurance, additional life insurance or customized retirement plans — and take advantage of those that fit their current lifestyles. On the healthcare side, high-deductible/lower-cost plans and health savings accounts can take some pressure off employees’ paychecks.

Those concerns notwithstanding, Foote says the benefit that employees should seek out most is career advancement. He reports that most IT professionals he has surveyed “would work for lower pay if they could get somewhere in their careers.”

Honing skills that are in demand and taking on new responsibilities are the best ways to insure against an uncertain job market. If you have those goods, Foote says, you’ll be well positioned to bargain for a bigger salary and better benefits.

Weak passwords still the downfall of enterprise security

A pet’s name or a favorite movie just isn’t enough

Computerworld – A recent data breach that exposed the Social Security numbers of more than 255,000 people in Utah has once again highlighted the longstanding but often underestimated risks posed to organizations by weak and default passwords.

The breach, involving a Medicaid server at the Utah Department of Health, resulted from a configuration error at the authentication layer of the server hosting the compromised data, according to state IT officials.

Many security analysts see that as a somewhat euphemistic admission by the state that the breached server was using a default administrative password or an easily guessable one. By taking advantage of the error, the attackers were able to bypass the perimeter-, network- and application-level security controls that IT administrators had put in place to protect the data on the server.

Such mistakes, though relatively easy to avoid, are surprisingly common.
What I think we are seeing is really what I like to call ‘the curse of the reusable password.’
Gartner analyst John Pescatore

In March, the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Energy released the results of an information security audit at the Bonneville Power Administration, which provides about 30% of wholesale power to regional utilities in the Pacific Northwest. According to the audit, vulnerability scans of nine applications used to support key financial, HR and security management functions at Bonneville identified 11 servers that had been configured with easily guessable passwords.

An attacker taking advantage of those vulnerabilities would have been able to gain complete access to the system. Four servers were configured to allow any remote user to access and modify shared files. One server hosted an administrator account that was protected only with a default password.

Earlier this month, a data breach at payment processing company Global Payments that exposed credit- and debit-card data belonging to about 1.5 million people was believed by analyst firm Gartner to have resulted from a weak authentication mechanism that allowed attackers to gain access to an administrative account. An attack on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by Chinese hackers and a compromise of the open-source WineHQ database last year are also believed to have originated with compromised administrator accounts.

An enterprise can have anywhere from hundreds to thousands of account names and passwords. Many of these accounts often have privileged access to applications, databases, networks and operating systems. While not all of them are always critical to the enterprise, there are numerous accounts that, if abused, can cause serious disruptions enterprisewide.

Previous studies have shown that the number of people who require administrative access to a system for maintenance purposes, or for completing tasks such as patching and upgrading, is often far greater than the number that managers know about or track. Nevertheless, many companies allow users and administrators to apply easy passwords or even default passwords to protect access to such accounts.

When multifactor authentication is used, the measures often involve relatively easy-to-crack knowledge-based authentication (KBA) mechanisms where a user is prompted for an answer to a security question, such as a first pet’s name or the name of a favorite movie.
MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com
A report released by Verizon last month showed that attacks exploiting weak passwords are still endemic in the retail and hospitality industries. Attackers can still go to a vendor’s site, get a client list and “just hit those [clients] with the default or guessable username-password combination,” Verizon noted in its report. “These are relatively easy attacks that require little in-depth knowledge or creativity.”

The tendency by many people to use the same password for multiple accounts is another huge issue, said John Pescatore, a Gartner analyst.

“A lot of Anonymous’ recent success has been in attacks where they have obtained users’ passwords to external services and then found the same passwords in use at sensitive internal applications or in email systems,” Pescatore said. “What I think we are seeing is really what I like to call ‘the curse of the reusable password.’ ”

One of the most important measures companies can take to ramp up their security is to raise the bar for passwords and authentication mechanisms, he said. “Similar to how you can’t shift from ‘Park’ to ‘Drive’ without putting your foot on the brake, there ought to be ‘safety interlocks’ in any piece of software that make it very hard to shift into Drive without changing the default password,” he said.

Adam Bosnian, executive vice president of corporate development at Cyber-Ark, a vendor of software for managing administrative passwords, said the problem that companies face is complex. While it’s one thing to require that administrators use complex passwords, it’s another thing to manage those passwords, he said. What often happens is that multiple administrators might need access to one system, and it is easiest to use a default or easily remembered password to control access to it.

When a complex password is used, administrators need to have three processes: One for securely sharing that password with each other, another process for changing the password when needed, and a third for keeping everyone informed about the changes. These processes can get especially difficult in larger organizations where the number of privileged accounts can be staggering, he said.

“The truth is, anyone trying to protect non-trivial assets should be using multifactor authentication and/or complementary controls to protect themselves,” said Peter Lindstrom, an analyst with Spire Security. “The password has too many weaknesses, including the obvious human ones,” he said.

Most password schemes that aren’t protected by another form of authentication or lockout controls are susceptible to brute-force compromise, where automated tools are used to guess passwords, he said. “At this stage of the IT game, there is really no excuse for using default passwords.”
